Itinerary
Day 1: Leaving Darwin, follow the Stuart Highway out of Darwin and continue via the township of Batchelor to Litchfield National Park.
After a comfort stop at a local café, View Florence Falls from a high vantage point, and take the short walk to the lower falls for a refreshing swim. Continue to Buley Rock hole for some time at one of Litchfields alternative leisure spots, and an opportunity for another swim if you wish. Take a stop in at Tolmer Falls and with time in hand, continue by road down the 4WD track towards Blyth homestead and Sandy Creek Falls. (may be seasonal due to local conditions, guides may determine accessibility on the day) Enjoy a picnic lunch at a secluded spot, before entering Labelle Downs Cattle Station (a 100 000 hectare private “Territory Cattle Station” that shares a boundary with the National Park) and the site of the tented camp. During the afternoon, drive out to a special outlook alongside Marindja Billabong - a fantastic wetland view and home to literally thousands of birds, along with many Wallabies and numerous other wildlife. Return to the camp adjacent Labelle Station homestead for the night - enjoy a delicious meal prepared in camp.
Day 2: Enjoy a beautiful outback morning in the company of birds and wildlife - after an early breakfast in camp, take a 1 ½ hour boat cruise on McCreddie's Billabong. Watch for an opportunity to see and photograph some of the many Freshwater and Estuarine Crocodiles (“salties”) in the billabong, along with myriad of different birds, while learning about the different habitats that make up this fascinating ecosystem. After the cruise, continue through the station to see the holding yards for the cattle. During the mustering season the facility can handle up to 2400 head of cattle in a day. From the station, head back into Litchfield National park, to Wangi Falls. Join a 1 ½ hour Aboriginal cultural experience in the company of one of the local Aboriginal families. You will gain an amazing insight into the early history of the Litchfield area, the culture of the local indigenous folk, including their food sources, art, language and customs. Enjoy a short bush tucker walk and a demonstration of a few of the hunting techniques. Stay at Wangi Falls for a picnic lunch and swim (swimming subject to seasonal access) in the large crystal clear pool - with an optional steady climb through the rainforest to the top of the falls (seasonally available).
After lunch, begin the journey back towards Darwin, using the northern access road via the Cox Peninsula road. Stop and view a magnificent stand of the unusual Magnetic Termite Mounds and if time permits, have one last refreshing swim in one of the creeks, before reaching Darwin in the early evening.
(In the event road closures or climatic problems prevent access to some Falls or affect road access alternative options will be included - Cox Peninsula road will be inaccessible during the wet season, in which case the return journey will be via Batchelor township).
